Women’s History Month: Celebrating the female forces at Connico
In honor of Women’s History Month, Connico is celebrating the incredible women leaders on our team. Throughout the month, we’ll be sharing conversations with these women and discussing topics from their different career paths to actions every woman can take to help support the advancement of women everywhere.
Our first spotlight in the series is Janet Terry, our Senior Marketing Specialist. Janet is an established marketing professional with more than 15 years of experience. For the past ten years, she has led marketing and business development efforts and collaborated with operations, sales and support staff in the architectural, engineering and construction industries. She’s been a vital member of our team for over 3 years.
Connico: Tell us how you got to where you are today.
Janet: After graduating from college with a major in business and minor in marketing, I began working in a few different industries. I kind of “fell into” the architectural/engineering/construction field while working for a large firm in Kansas City, Missouri. I did a lot of the grunt work that a newly indoctrinated marketing person would do, but I stuck with it. I was fascinated by the ways people's daily lives were affected by the things we build and design.
Connico: What is your role at Connico/what do you focus on in your current role?
Janet: I handle everything in the marketing space, including proposal submissions, collateral write-ups, database work, updating our website and designing graphics.
Connico: Construction has traditionally been a male dominated industry. What advice would you give women who are looking to enter or advance in the field?
Janet: Always remember to be accountable and to contribute. If you are someone who is always showing-up and accountable, people will count on you. Contribute as often as you can, whether it be adding a different flare to a discussion, directing a completely new course of action or just taking someone out for coffee. Whenever you’re with others, always be fully present.
Connico: What is your proudest accomplishment and why?
Janet: My proudest accomplishment is raising my daughter and showing her the power of what a woman can accomplish with drive, determination, faith, and love.
Connico: What’s one action every woman can take to support the advancement or success of women around her?
Janet: Join an organization or two where you can support the success of women. Whether it’s a professional organization where you can mentor a woman or a personal charity where you aid women survivors of human trafficking, everyone needs to rise to the occasion and lend a hand to support the success of fellow women.
