Team Tapestry: Meet Project Specialist Usman Akram

Usman Akram joined Connico in 2023, bringing 15 years of global experience in aviation construction. As a civil engineer, project specialist, contract manager, doctoral candidate, and published researcher, Usman’s career has spanned countries, cultures, and complex airport programs. His credentials are impressive, but what really makes him such a valued part of our team is how he channels his experience into leadership that elevates everyone around him.
In this edition of Team Tapestry, we sat down with Usman to hear more about how his international experience shaped his career, his passion for project management, and his cricket team.
Tell us about your background and your role at Connico.
Prior to my time at Connico, I earned my Bachelor of Science in civil engineering and a Master of Science in project management in Pakistan. I went on to work as a client and airport representative, gaining experience in airport construction and expansion projects within South Asia and the Middle East.
Since joining Connico in 2023, I have been a part of the field services department. I serve as a contracts manager, in addition to being a coordinator for our field assignments. In both roles, I focus on improving efficiency, maintaining quality, and supporting our teams in the field so we can deliver strong results for our clients.
How does Connico support your personal growth and development?
Connico is on a mission to be the best place to work. It’s a goal everyone is invested in and working to achieve. I’ve seen how our leadership team prioritizes growth by creating a culture where high-performing, compassionate leaders can thrive. I’ve had the opportunity to grow both professionally and academically through training and mentorship, and I make it a priority to pass that support along. Whether I’m guiding team members in the field or sharing lessons from my own experience, I want to help others feel empowered to lead, contribute, and keep learning. The diversity across our team also stands out. We come from different backgrounds and bring unique perspectives to the table, which drives innovation and makes us all better.
What do you find most rewarding about your role?
The most rewarding part of my job is doing what I’m passionate about. Connico’s leaders are big believers in the “right person in the right seat” model, which allows team members to play to their strengths and contribute in areas they are most inspired by.
How does your role in project management contribute to the bigger picture of Connico’s goals and success?
As our team and operations expand, my role helps keep everything moving smoothly. I assist in managing our project portfolio and support project leads, ensuring we're aligned and always striving for excellence.
How has working and studying internationally benefited you in your current role?
My international studies have provided a whole new perspective to my work at Connico. My experience abroad taught me about new construction methods and gave me a greater appreciation for different cultures.
What’s a skill you’ve developed during your time at Connico that you’re proud of?
I’ve sharpened my skills in cost estimating and construction scheduling thanks to the guidance of our in-house experts. Their attention to detail and commitment to quality have raised the standard for how I approach each project. I’m proud to be part of a team that pushes for excellence at every stage and consistently earns our clients’ trust through that dedication.
Who is someone in the industry you admire and why?
I greatly admire Sri Kumar, our president. His success at this stage in his career is inspiring, and his energy and vision for the industry are unmatched. He leads with purpose, and I’m confident he’ll continue making a meaningful impact at Connico and beyond. I’m proud to contribute to that journey and to be part of the work we’re doing together.
Which Connico core value resonates most with you and why? (Respect, Resiliency, Integrity, Inclusivity, Thoughtfulness, and Innovation)
Respect. Connico’s culture is built on a “people first” mindset, and that approach is one of the main reasons we’re able to deliver high-quality work. When people feel valued and respected, they bring their best to every project, and that shows in our results.
Share a moment where you felt especially proud to be part of the Connico team.
I feel especially proud every time we hear from clients that our work exceeded their expectations. Moments like that reflect the effort and dedication of the entire team. At Connico, we believe in collective success, and it’s always an honor to share in that sense of accomplishment together.
What do you wish more people would ask you about?
Cricket! I love the sport and am starting a first-of-its-kind cricket club in Hebron, Ky. Two of my colleagues at Connico have already signed on, and I’m hoping to introduce even more people to the game. It’s a great way to connect, stay active, and build community.
